The best hiking routes in Ismaninger Speichersee und Fischteiche

Ismaninger Speichersee und Fischteiche is a heavily engineered wetland complex northeast of Munich, dominated by a massive artificial reservoir and a vast grid of rectangular breeding ponds. This is not a wild, natural lake district, but a functional wastewater treatment facility and fish farm that has become a critical habitat for waterfowl. The landscape is defined by straight lines, concrete embankments, and gravel service tracks. Walkers should expect long, flat, and exposed dikes rather than winding forest paths.

Underfoot, the terrain consists almost entirely of compacted gravel and dirt roads that run alongside the water basins. There are no boardwalks or sandy trails here. The central reservoir is divided into two large basins by a middle dike, offering elevated views over open water on one side and structured fish ponds on the other. Deciduous woodland strips and scrub line some of the outer canals, but the overall feel is open and industrial.

In November, the area fills with thousands of migrating tufted ducks and common pochards, making it a prime location for birdwatching. Because the paths are wide and flat, they are easy to navigate, though the lack of shelter means there is no protection from the elements. It is a functional landscape where the appeal lies in observing birdlife rather than seeking a wilderness experience.
