About Hortobágyi Nemzeti Park
Hortobágyi Nemzeti Park consists of a vast, flat alkali grassland, known as the puszta, interspersed with extensive wetlands, marshes, and artificial fishponds. Walking here means navigating a landscape shaped by centuries of seasonal flooding from the Tisza River and subsequent grazing by traditional livestock. The terrain is entirely flat, lacking any hills, forests, or valleys, which means your orientation relies on distant sweep wells, grazing herds of grey cattle, and the occasional line of reeds. Underfoot, you will mostly encounter hard-packed dirt tracks, dusty clay paths that crack when dry, and wooden boardwalks constructed over the marshier sections.

The park is divided between dry, saline pastures where vegetation is sparse and low-growing, and wet reedbeds that choke the shallow watercourses. If you choose the open grasslands, you will walk along wide agricultural tracks where the soil is alkaline and pale. For a different experience, the boardwalks around the Hortobágy-halastó fishponds lead you directly into dense stands of reeds, where the ground is inaccessible by foot. These two distinct environments dictate your walking options, as there are no intermediate woodland trails or shaded paths.
In late autumn, particularly in October, the fishponds become a major staging ground for tens of thousands of migrating cranes, a seasonal event that draws birdwatchers to the designated observation towers. During these weeks, the trails near the main ponds are busier, while the remote pasture tracks remain quiet. Visitors should expect a highly exposed landscape with no natural shelter from the elements, where the walking is physically easy due to the lack of gradients but requires preparation for long, open stretches without shade.
