Hodalen landskapsvernområde protects a distinct glacial landscape dominated by dead-ice topography. Walking here, you will navigate a dense network of steep, narrow eskers and kettle holes formed by melting ice blocks at the end of the last ice age. The terrain is characterized by these parallel gravel ridges, which rise sharply above the surrounding pine forest and peat bogs, creating a repetitive, undulating pattern underfoot rather than open, sweeping vistas.

Underfoot, the paths alternate between dry, lichen-covered sandy soil along the crests of the eskers and soft, damp peat in the depressions between them. While some sections follow clear, firm tracks, other parts of the reserve require navigating uneven, stony ground where the glacial deposits remain exposed.
