Hjerkinn / Kongsvoll / Drivdalen landskapsvernområde offers a transition from the high, dry mountain plateau down into a steep, green river valley. Unlike the rugged rock fields of the high peaks nearby, this protected area is characterised by rolling alpine tundra, willow scrub, and rich botanical slopes. The underlying slate and limestone bedrock support an unusually diverse alpine flora, which is easily spotted along the trails as low-growing cushions and colourful mountain flowers rather than dense forest.

Underfoot, walkers will find a mix of terrain depending on their elevation. The higher routes across the plateau consist of dry, sandy tracks and stony paths worn into the glacial deposits, while the lower sections near the river Drivan feature damp birch woodland where peat and mud are common. Boardwalks are present over the wettest bogs, but sturdy footwear is necessary for the rough, root-crossed paths and loose shale slopes that line the valley sides.

In July, the botanical richness of the slopes around Kongsvoll is at its peak, making it a key area for those interested in alpine plants. The area is easily accessible from the main valley road and railway, meaning the paths closest to the trailheads are often busier, while the higher trails leading toward the plateau edge offer a quieter walking experience focused on the subtle changes in vegetation and geology.
