Fokstugu landskapsvernområde is a high-altitude wetland reserve dominated by flat peat mires, willow scrub, and shallow open water. Unlike the rocky, dry mountain terrain nearby, this area is defined by its water-saturated ground and low-lying vegetation. The landscape is a classic sub-arctic marshland, shaped by slow-moving water and permafrost features that create subtle mounds in the peat. It is not a place for climbing steep peaks or navigating deep gorges, but rather a wide, level basin where the ground is consistently soft.

Walking here is strictly regulated to protect the nesting waterbirds, particularly during the spring and summer breeding season. A designated path, partially equipped with wooden boardwalks, allows you to cross the wettest sections of the mire without sinking into the peat. Where the boardwalks end, the trail transitions to damp, muddy earth and low willow thickets. A wooden observation tower along the route provides a vantage point over the open water of Fokstumyra, allowing you to observe the marsh without stepping onto the fragile, waterlogged soil.
