The best hiking routes in Färnebofjärden

Färnebofjärden National Park is defined by the broad, lake-like expansions of the Dalälven river, where the water meets a flat landscape of flooded forests, bogs, and dry coniferous ridges. Unlike the deep valleys or high peaks of northern Sweden, this is a low-lying terrain where the transition between land and water is constantly blurred. Walkers will find a distinct contrast between the dry, pine-covered eskers that rise slightly above the water and the vast, wet alder swamps that are regularly inundated by seasonal floods.

Underfoot, the trail conditions change rapidly depending on which of these zones you choose. The dry eskers offer firm, sandy tracks carpeted with pine needles, making for straightforward walking. In contrast, entering the wetter forest zones requires using wooden boardwalks that cut through peat bogs and marshy woodlands. Without these boardwalks, the ground is a mix of soft peat and standing water, where the forest floor is dominated by mosses and water-loving vegetation.

Choosing a route here means deciding between the open, breeze-swept riverbanks and the dense, quiet interior forests. The riverside paths offer clear views across the wide reaches of the water, where dead trees still stand in the shallows as a result of natural flooding. Moving inland, the paths quickly become enclosed by thick spruce and deciduous canopy, where the sound of the river fades and the terrain becomes a labyrinth of small islands and damp hollows.
