Europaschutzgebiet Ifen is defined by its stark contrasts of karst limestone and green alpine meadows. Walking here means navigating the Gottesackerplateau, a vast, bare limestone pavement scarred by deep fissures, furrows, and sinkholes. This geological formation requires constant attention to footing, as the path leads directly over the exposed, grey rock. It is a dry, waterless surface where rain immediately disappears into the subterranean cave systems, leaving a barren, desert-like landscape at high elevation.

In contrast to the rocky plateau, the lower slopes of the reserve feature subalpine spruce forests and wet, peat-rich meadows. Here, the underfoot conditions transition from solid, uneven limestone to softer dirt tracks and damp grass paths. The vegetation adapts quickly to these changes, with hardy alpine wildflowers clinging to the crevices of the karst while lush pastures dominate the gentler gradients below the massive cliffs of the Hoher Ifen.

This area is not a place for gentle, rolling woodland strolls or easy lakeside paths. The terrain is rugged and highly exposed, with steep ascents over loose scree and fractured stone.
