About Εθνικός Δρυμός Ολύμπου
Ethnikos Drimos Olympoy is characterized by dramatic elevation changes, shifting quickly from Mediterranean scrub at its lower limits to dense beech, fir, and black pine forests, before ending in barren limestone scree and alpine plateaus. Unlike gentler rolling hills, this terrain demands careful footwork on limestone slabs that can be slippery, and high-altitude sections require basic scrambling skills. The lower forested tracks offer shade under a thick canopy, whereas the upper zones are completely exposed to the elements with no shelter. Water sources are scarce on the high limestone plateaus, meaning walkers must carry their entire supply once leaving the lower springs.
In May and June, the melting snow reveals alpine meadows flush with low-growing wildflowers, while October brings deep leaf litter to the beech forests. The trailheads near Litochoro and the main refuge routes are often busy with climbers, but the lateral paths leading into the deeper gorges offer a much quieter, more isolated experience of this vertical landscape.
