Navigating the park requires sticking to the raised embankments and dirt roads, as the surrounding marshes are impassable on foot. The vegetation changes from dense reeds near the freshwater channels to low, salt-tolerant glasswort shrubs closer to the sea. In late autumn, particularly in November, these salt marshes turn a deep red, contrasting sharply with the grey-green silt of the lagoons.
This is a working landscape where you will share the tracks with local fishermen, cattle herders, and park rangers. While the open dikes offer clear views of the lagoons, there is no shade or shelter from the elements. It is a location suited for those who appreciate flat, horizontal landscapes and birdwatching rather than traditional hiking terrain.
