The best hiking routes in Εθνικό Πάρκο Κορώνειας-Βόλβης

Εθνικό Πάρκο Κορώνειας-Βόλβης is a flat, wetland-dominated basin centered around two large lakes, Koroneia and Volvi. Unlike the rugged, pine-forested mountains that rise to the north and south, the park interior consists of wide alluvial plains, reed beds, and wet meadows. Walkers will find a landscape shaped by water levels, where the terrain transitions from dry, dusty agricultural tracks on the upper terraces to soft, silt-heavy paths closer to the shorelines. There are no steep climbs or rocky ridges here, only a level basin floor where the walking is flat and open.

Underfoot, the tracks are primarily packed dirt, which can become sticky clay near the water margins. A key feature to observe while walking is the distinct band of riparian forest, particularly the ancient plane trees at Apollonia, which thrive where the water table is high. The vegetation changes rapidly from salt-tolerant scrub on the dried-out beds of Lake Koroneia to dense reed belts along the deeper waters of Lake Volvi. These transitions are visible from the dirt tracks that skirt the agricultural fields.

In May, the lakeside meadows near Rentina are filled with nesting birds, making the shoreline paths particularly active with wildlife. While the main lakeside observation points can attract birdwatchers, the long dirt tracks connecting the villages across the basin are generally quiet. This is a landscape for those who prefer flat, open-air walking through a working agricultural and lacustrine environment rather than deep forest hikes or mountain climbs.
