Espedalen landskapsvernområde protects a distinct valley landscape shaped by glacial forces, where the valley floor is dominated by a chain of long, narrow lakes, including Espedalsvatnet and Breisjøen. Unlike the high, barren peaks of the nearby national parks, this protected area is characterized by dense birch and pine forests that climb the moderate slopes, interspersed with open mires and gravelly moraine ridges. The geology here is notable for its nickel-rich bedrock and large potholes, particularly the giant kettles at Helvete, which you can observe directly from the trails.

Underfoot, walkers will encounter a mix of terrain types. The lower paths along the lakes and through the forest consist of damp soil, peat, and exposed tree roots, with wooden boardwalks laid over the wettest marsh sections. As you ascend the valley sides toward the treeline, the ground transitions to drier, stony tracks and heather-covered slopes. The elevation gain is steady but rarely precipitous, making it a landscape of forested ridges rather than sheer rock faces.

In early June, the melting snow feeds the streams, making the valley floor particularly damp, while the birch trees begin to leaf out.
