Dovre nasjonalpark occupies a high-altitude plateau characterized by vast, dry alpine tundra and rounded, weathered summits rather than the sharp peaks found in other Norwegian ranges. The terrain is dominated by ancient glacial deposits, leaving a ground cover of light-colored reindeer lichen, dwarf birch, and heather that stretches across the undulating landscape. Walking here means navigating a dry, stony environment where the soil is thin and the vegetation is low-growing, shaped by the cold climate and low precipitation of this rain-shadow region.

Underfoot, walkers will find a mix of faint, stony footpaths and open, trackless terrain where navigation requires a map and compass. Unlike wetter parks, peat bogs are relatively scarce here, meaning boardwalks are rare; instead, you will mostly tread on dry, gravelly moraine ridges and fields of blocky scree near the higher ridges like Fokstuhøe.
