About Chránená krajinná oblasť Kysuce
Chránená krajinná oblasť Kysuce offers a distinct walking landscape in northern Slovakia, characterized by a mosaic of flysch sandstone hills, scattered traditional settlements, and damp meadows. Unlike the rocky limestone peaks found in other Slovak ranges, this area is defined by softer, rounded ridges and deep clay-heavy valleys. The underlying sandstone and clay layers do not absorb water easily, meaning walkers will frequently encounter damp ground, small springs, and peat bogs directly alongside the paths, particularly in the lower depressions.

Underfoot, the terrain alternates between stony forestry tracks, grassy ridge paths, and muddy passages through spruce and silver fir forests. A defining feature of the landscape is the kopanice, a traditional system of scattered homesteads and small terraced fields that break up the woodland. Walking here feels like moving through a working rural countryside where forest forestry tracks transition into narrow lanes between old wooden barns and pastures.
While the area lacks high-alpine challenges, it provides steady, moderate climbs. The ridge trails offer views over a rolling landscape of dark coniferous forests and green clearings rather than dramatic rocky drops. In late autumn, around October, the beech trees mixed among the spruce turn a deep orange, making the woodland borders particularly distinct against the dark evergreen backdrop.
