The best hiking routes in CHKO Český kras

CHKO Āesk% kras is a karst landscape of limestone valleys, steep wooded slopes, and deep gorges located southwest of Prague. Unlike the sandstone rock cities found elsewhere in the country, this area is defined by its gray limestone cliffs, dark caves, and dry oak forests. The terrain is rugged but lacks high peaks, offering instead a network of undulating paths that transition from exposed, sun-baked hillsides to damp, shaded ravine bottoms where small streams cut through the rock.

Underfoot, walkers will encounter a mix of rocky limestone tracks, loose scree, and muddy woodland paths. The trails frequently climb and descend through old quarries, where the geological layers of the Prague Basin are clearly visible in the exposed rock faces. Deciduous forests of oak and hornbeam dominate the higher ground, while the valley floors are often cooler and support different vegetation, creating a distinct contrast in microclimates over short distances.

In April and May, the forest floor in the ravines is covered in spring wildflowers before the tree canopy closes. Well-known spots such as the villages near the Karlštejn castle or the edges of the largest quarries can become busy with visitors, but the deeper network of forest paths remains much quieter. Walkers should expect steep, uneven climbs on natural stone steps rather than flat, paved walkways.
