About CHKO Blaník
CHKO Blaník is the smallest protected landscape area in the Czech Republic, dominated by the twin forested hills of Velký Blaník and Malý Blaník. Unlike the dramatic sandstone rock cities or high mountain ranges found elsewhere in the country, this area offers a gentle, pastoral landscape of rolling hills, small fields, fishponds, and quiet woodlots. The terrain is defined by its agricultural character, interspersed with patches of mixed beech and spruce forest that cover the quartzite summits. It is a traditional Central Bohemian countryside where the human impact of farming and forestry is visible at every turn.

Underfoot, walkers will mostly encounter wide, unpaved forestry tracks, dirt paths through fields, and occasional quiet asphalt lanes connecting the small settlements. The climb to the top of Velký Blaník follows a steeper, stony path winding through old beech trees and past granite boulder screes, which requires more careful stepping than the flat agricultural paths below. Wet meadows and small streams dictate the vegetation in the lower valleys, where the ground can be soft, though boardwalks are generally absent except for very short sections near local water features.
This area is ideal for those seeking a relaxed half-day or full-day walk rather than a challenging wilderness trek. The main trail up Velký Blaník leads to a wooden lookout tower, which can become busy on weekends, particularly in autumn when the beech leaves turn red and gold. In contrast, the paths around Malý Blaník and its ruined chapel remain much quieter, offering a more solitary experience among the trees.
