About Централен Балкан

Централен Балкан National Park covers the steep, central spine of the Balkan Mountains, characterized by dramatic vertical relief that contrasts sharply with the flatter plains to the north and south. Walkers here will encounter a landscape divided by altitude. The lower slopes are dominated by dense, ancient beech forests where the ground is covered in deep leaf litter and damp soil. As you climb higher, this heavy canopy gives way to vast, windswept alpine meadows and rocky ridges where the underfoot terrain changes to exposed stone, gravelly dirt tracks, and low-growing mountain shrubs.

Unlike gentler rolling hills, this area demands steep ascents and descents along marked ridges. The main ridge trail, which forms part of the Kom-Emine path, is highly exposed and defined by sheer cliffs and deep ravines. Water is a constant presence on the slopes, with numerous streams cutting through the rock to form deep gorges and high waterfalls, such as Raysko Praskalo, which are visible from the trailside.

In late spring, around June, the high meadows are vibrant with alpine wildflowers, while autumn brings deep color changes to the beech forests below. The trails are often rocky and uneven, requiring careful footwork, especially on the steep ladders and metal cables installed on the more vertical rock sections. While the main huts along the ridge can be busy with hikers during the summer months, the secondary forested paths offer a much quieter, more solitary walking experience.
