Buer landskapsvernområde is a protected landscape area defined by its proximity to the massive Folgefonna glacier. Unlike the flat, forested valleys found elsewhere in the region, this area is characterized by a steep, rocky valley floor carved by glacial activity. The landscape is dominated by grey granite rock faces, rushing meltwater rivers, and gravelly moraine ridges left behind by the retreating ice. Vegetation is sparse, consisting mainly of low-lying alpine shrubs, mosses, and hardy birch trees clinging to the steep slopes.

Walkers here will find a distinct contrast underfoot between the lower valley and the higher approach to the glacier. The trail begins on relatively wide, stony dirt tracks running alongside the roaring Buerelvi river. As you ascend, the path transitions into a rugged, uneven route over bare bedrock, loose scree, and large boulders. Wooden suspension bridges and fixed ropes are installed at the steepest rock sections to help walkers negotiate the slippery, water-worn stone surfaces.

This is a landscape of active geological change rather than gentle woodland paths. You will not find quiet, sandy pine forests or wide, rolling meadows here.
