The best hiking routes in Biebrzański Park Narodowy

Biebrzański Park Narodowy is dominated by one of Europe's largest remaining peatland and marsh complexes. The landscape is flat and defined by the slow-moving Biebrza River, which floods the surrounding basin. Walking here means navigating a distinct contrast between the wet, open alluvial plains and the dry, sandy dunes, known as grądy, which rise slightly above the marshes and are covered in pine and birch forest.

Underfoot, the terrain dictates your route. The wettest areas are accessible only via wooden boardwalks, such as those near Carska Droga or the Długa Luka trail, where you walk directly over deep peat and sedge meadows. Away from the boardwalks, the paths turn into sandy tracks that can be soft and uneven, requiring sturdy footwear. There are no hills or deep valleys here; the elevation changes are minimal, and the challenge comes from the soft ground rather than climbs.

In spring, particularly around April, the rising river waters submerge large parts of the meadows, turning the valley into a vast shallow lake where only the raised forest islands remain dry. By late summer, the water recedes, exposing dry mud and dense reed beds. The park is highly exposed, with little shade on the open marsh boardwalks, while the forested sandy tracks offer dense canopy cover.
