The best hiking routes in Åsnens nationalpark

Åsnens nationalpark consists of a vast, shallow lake archipelago surrounded by ancient, mossy beech forests and swampy woodlands. Unlike the pine plantations common in southern Sweden, this area is defined by its old-growth deciduous trees, boulder-strewn shores, and hundreds of rocky islands. The landscape is flat and low-lying, offering no high vantage points or deep valleys, but rather a dense, watery labyrinth where the forest floor meets the lake edge.

Underfoot, walkers will find a mix of terrain depending on their chosen entry point. At the main entrance of Sunnabron, the paths are wide, firm, and accessible, winding through towering beech trees. Further into the park, particularly around Trollberget, the ground becomes more rugged, with wooden boardwalks carrying you over wet peat and marshy hollows, interspersed with uneven dirt tracks where exposed tree roots and large granite boulders require careful stepping.

In May, the forest floor at Sunnabron is covered in a carpet of white wood anemones before the beech canopy closes. The park is highly accessible but can feel busy around the main wooden piers and picnic sites during summer. For a quieter walk, the paths leading away from the water into the coniferous bog areas offer a more enclosed, silent atmosphere dominated by damp mosses and lichens.
