The best hiking routes in Lika-Senj County

Lika-Senj County presents a sharp divide between the damp, forested interior of Croatia and the stark, rocky barrier of the coastal mountains. Walkers must choose between the lush, water-dominated karst of the inland basin and the exposed, limestone ridges that overlook the Adriatic Sea. The terrain changes abruptly from soft forest soil and wooden boardwalks to sharp, uneven stone paths where water is scarce.

In the east, Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera offers a landscape shaped by travertine barriers, where you walk on constructed wooden paths directly over lakes and waterfalls. In contrast, Nacionalni park Sjeverni Velebit and Nacionalni park Paklenica present a rugged alpine environment of bare limestone, deep sinkholes, and steep canyon walls.
