Riddersholms naturreservat, situated on the Roslagen coast, offers a dense mix of coastal forests, damp meadows, and rocky shorelines. Unlike the open sandy beaches found further south, this reserve is characterized by its clay-rich soil, limestone-influenced flora, and thick groves of hazel and deciduous trees. Walkers can choose between sheltered woodland paths and exposed trails that run directly along the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea.

The terrain underfoot varies significantly depending on the path you choose. The inner forest loops follow soft dirt tracks through damp, mossy groves where wild orchids bloom in early summer, particularly in June. As you move toward the shoreline, the ground transitions to uneven gravel, exposed tree roots, and flat granite rocks that require careful stepping. Low-lying sections near the meadows are managed with wooden boardwalks to protect the sensitive wetland vegetation.

This reserve is not a place of dramatic cliffs or sweeping sandy dunes, but rather a low-lying, gently undulating coastal landscape shaped by traditional grazing and forestry. The presence of old wooded pastures, known as hagar, means you will frequently encounter stiles and gates along the way. While the shoreline paths near the main parking areas are popular with local visitors, the deeper forest trails remain quiet, offering a close-up look at the rich undergrowth and coastal birdlife.
