About Park Krajobrazowy Cysterskie Kompozycje Krajobrazowe Rud Wielkich

Park Krajobrazowy Cysterskie Kompozycje Krajobrazowe Rud Wielkich offers a landscape shaped by centuries of monastic land management, where the Cistercian monks modified the river systems to create extensive fishponds. Walking here, you will not find dramatic ridges or deep gorges, but rather a gently rolling terrain dominated by dense pine and mixed beech-oak forests, interspersed with wide, open pond basins. The transition from dry, sandy forest tracks to damp, mossy paths near the water edges defines the physical character of the walks.

Underfoot, the paths vary from soft pine-needle carpets and sandy tracks that can become loose in dry periods, to firmer dirt roads used for forestry. In the wetter sections near the Ruda river and the artificial ponds, the ground turns to damp loam and peat, occasionally crossed by simple wooden footbridges. The landscape is characterized by these sudden shifts between the dry, quiet interior of the pine woods and the open, reed-fringed banks of the historic fisheries.

While the area around the Rudy monastery complex attracts more visitors, the deeper forest trails and the edges of the larger ponds remain quiet. The landscape is best understood by observing the straight drainage ditches and the regular layout of the ponds, which reveal how natural wetlands were systematically engineered into a productive, working forest landscape.
