The Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini is a limestone mountain range in the central Apennines, characterized by high, bare karst plateaus and steep, grassy ridges. Unlike the granite peaks of northern ranges, these mountains are defined by massive limestone cliffs, deep gorges like the Gola dell'Infernaccio, and the vast, treeless upland plains of the Piano Grande. Walkers will find a landscape shaped by sheep farming and tectonic activity, where wide-open pastures contrast sharply with dense beech forests clinging to the lower slopes.

Underfoot, the terrain varies from wide, gravelly farm tracks on the plateaus to narrow, stony singletrack trails that climb the steeper ridges. The limestone geology means surface water is rare on the high ground, so you will not find mountain lakes or rushing streams once you ascend above the valley floors. In June, the Piano Grande undergoes a significant change as the wild lentils and wildflowers bloom, drawing more visitors to the plain, while the higher ridges like Monte Vettore remain quieter and more demanding.

This is a high-altitude landscape where paths are often exposed to the elements, with little natural shelter above the tree line. It is not a place for gentle woodland strolls or lakeside walks; the climbs are often long and sustained over loose scree and limestone bedrock.
