The best hiking routes in Naturpark Dümmer

Naturpark Dümmer is defined by the contrast between its large, shallow lake and the vast, flat raised bogs that surround it. Walkers will find a landscape of open water, reed beds, and wet meadows near the lake shore, which transitions into thick peat moss and birch forests further out. The terrain is entirely flat, offering no hills or deep valleys, but instead providing long views across the water and the low-lying plains. Underfoot, the paths vary from firm gravel dikes and wooden boardwalks over the marshy edges to soft, peat-soil tracks in the boggy areas.

Because of the high water table, water is a constant presence on these walks. You will notice drainage ditches cutting through the pastures and specialized bog vegetation like cotton grass and heather growing along the damp paths. The area is a major resting site for migratory birds, particularly in October and November, when thousands of cranes gather in the shallow waters and surrounding fields, making the lakeside observation towers popular vantage points.

While the paved lakeside promenades and observation platforms can be busy with visitors, the sandy tracks leading into the deeper peat bogs offer a much quieter experience. Walking here requires sticking to the designated paths, as the ground off the trails is waterlogged and unstable. It is a landscape shaped by historical peat cutting, visible in the straight water channels and rectangular ponds that now line the walking routes.
