About Hattebergsdalen landskapsvernområde
Hattebergsdalen landskapsvernområde offers a direct transition from the manicured grounds of the Baroniet Rosendal manor house to a steep, glacier-carved valley. Unlike the flatter coastal strips nearby, this protected landscape is defined by its sheer rock walls, rushing river, and active sheep pastures. The valley floor features a gravel farm road that makes the lower section accessible, but the terrain quickly becomes rugged and rocky as you head deeper toward the high plateau of Folgefonna.

Underfoot, the transition is sharp. The initial wide, gravel track gives way to rough, uneven mountain paths dominated by wet peat, exposed tree roots, and slippery granite slabs. The valley is characterized by its dense deciduous woodland of birch and alder at the bottom, which thins out into open alpine scrub and scree slopes as the elevation rises. The Hattebergselva river is a constant presence, its loud, rushing water and waterfalls shaping the soundscape of the entire walk.
This is a deep, enclosed valley rather than an open mountain plateau, meaning views are framed by towering rock faces rather than wide horizons. Visitors should expect a steady, sometimes steep climb rather than a gentle stroll. In June, the melting snow from the higher peaks feeds the waterfalls, making the water crossings along the upper paths particularly wide, while the lower meadows are used for active grazing, requiring walkers to navigate gates and watch for livestock.
