Chránená krajinná oblasť Vihorlat covers a heavily forested volcanic mountain range in eastern Slovakia, where the landscape is defined by ancient beech woods and steep, rocky slopes rather than open meadows or high alpine peaks. Walkers here will notice a distinct lack of pine plantations; instead, the canopy is dominated by towering, old-growth European beech trees that filter the light into a deep green shade during summer. The terrain is characterized by dark volcanic basalt rocks, steep ravines, and damp forest floors covered in thick leaf litter.
