The best hiking routes in Győr-Moson-Sopron

Győr-Moson-Sopron sits at a flat, watery crossroads where the Hungarian plain meets the foothills of the Alps and the borders of Austria and Slovakia. Walkers here must choose between two starkly different landscapes: the vast, reed-dominated wetlands of the west and the forested river floodplains of the north. This is a low-lying region of gravel, silt, and clay underfoot, where the paths are entirely flat or gently rolling, with no deep valleys or high peaks to climb.

To the west, the landscape is dominated by the shallow steppe lake basin shared by Fertő-Hanság Nemzeti Park and the adjacent Nationalpark Neusiedler See - Seewinkel. Walking here means following dirt tracks and occasional wooden boardwalks through salt marshes and dense reed beds, where the vegetation can block views entirely. In contrast, the northern borderlands along the Danube, protected partly within Chránená krajinná oblasť Dunajské luhy, offer shaded paths under dense riverine canopy, where gravel tracks wind past side branches of the river.

In October, the open fields of CHVÚ Sysľovské polia reveal a dry, agricultural borderland where bustards gather on the tilled earth. The well-known lakeside paths near the villages can be busier with cyclists and birdwatchers, while the muddy tracks of the Hanság basin are often quieter. Your choice depends on whether you prefer the enclosed, damp shade of river forests or the wide, exposed horizons of the saline wetlands.
