For a different experience, the Parco naturale regionale delle Prealpi Giulie in the east features steep but greener slopes, where the limestone meets damp beech forests. Underfoot, you will negotiate damp leaf litter, exposed tree roots, and limestone pavement. Further south, the tiny Riserva Naturale Val Rosandra offers a completely different terrain of exposed, wind-swept karst, where you walk on sharp, fractured limestone gravel and bare bedrock, with views down into a steep-sided gorge carved by water.
In late October, the beech forests of the Foresta regionale del Prescudin turn a deep rust-brown, making it a distinct destination for those who prefer enclosed, wooded valleys over exposed ridges. This reserve offers softer forest tracks rather than the exposed, technical scrambles found in the high peaks to the north. By understanding these transitions from the dry, white scree of the western mountains to the damp, forested eastern valleys, you can select the terrain that matches your physical comfort.
