Underfoot, the terrain dictates the pace. Elevated wooden boardwalks protect the fragile salt marshes and reedbeds, keeping boots clear of the tidal mud, while inland tracks consist of deep, loose sand that requires more physical effort. The transition from the massive, mobile sand dune near Olveira to the damp, low vegetation of the inland pastures is sudden and visible in the changing plant life.
During the autumn migration in October, the mudflats and lagoon edges become active feeding grounds for wading birds, which are easily observed from the designated bird hides. The open nature of the reserve means there is little shelter from maritime elements, making the choice between the exposed beach tracks and the more sheltered pine-fringed inland paths a key decision for your walk.
