The best hiking routes in ZEC Monte e Lagoa de Louro

ZEC Monte e Lagoa de Louro is a coastal conservation area defined by the immediate contrast between a granite mountain and a freshwater lagoon system. The landscape is dominated by the granite dome of Monte Louro, which rises abruptly from the Atlantic shoreline, and the adjacent Lagoa de As Xarfas, a shallow lagoon impounded behind a massive sand dune barrier. Walking here means navigating these two distinct environments within a very short distance.

Underfoot, the terrain shifts from loose, deep sand along the beach and dune margins to hard-packed, rocky granite paths as you ascend the slopes of the mount. The lower wetland area features some wooden boardwalks to protect the fragile dune vegetation, while the climb up Monte Louro requires stepping over uneven stone surfaces and navigating narrow, scrub-lined dirt tracks. The vegetation transitions rapidly from salt-tolerant beach grasses to low, wind-sheared gorse and heather on the exposed rock faces.

This area does not offer deep forest cover or high mountain passes, but rather a compact, open coastal loop. The transition from the freshwater lagoon habitat to the marine environment is visible in the changing birdlife and plant species along the path. While the beach and lagoon edges can attract beachgoers and birdwatchers during the summer months, the steep trails up the granite mount remain less frequented.
