The best hiking routes in Zbiornik Mietkowski

Zbiornik Mietkowski is a large, artificial reservoir created by damming the Bystrzyca River, presenting a landscape dominated by open water, concrete embankments, and flat, gravelly shores. Unlike natural lakes, its water levels fluctuate significantly, exposing wide mudflats and sandy shallows that attract numerous migratory birds. Walkers will find a stark, functional environment where the massive concrete dam contrasts with the surrounding low-lying Silesian plain.

Underfoot, the paths vary from paved concrete slabs along the main dam structure to loose gravel, sand, and muddy tracks along the southern and eastern banks. There are no boardwalks or marked woodland trails here; instead, the route follows the exposed perimeter of the reservoir, where the lack of tree cover offers direct views across the wide expanse of water. In late autumn, particularly in November, the receding water reveals extensive sandbars where flocks of gulls and waders gather.

This is a flat, utilitarian landscape rather than a pristine wilderness. It lacks rolling hills, deep forests, or sheltered valleys, offering instead a wide, open shoreline that can feel exposed. While the paved dam section is popular with local strollers, the unpaved southern banks near the inlet of the Bystrzyca River provide a quieter, rougher walking experience on uneven dirt tracks.
