The best hiking routes in Pilsko

Pilsko is a massive, dome-shaped mountain on the border of Poland and Slovakia, characterized by its distinct altitudinal zones. Unlike the sharp, jagged peaks of nearby ranges, this massif offers broad, gently rounded ridges. Walkers starting from the lower slopes will pass through dense spruce forests, which gradually give way to a wide belt of dwarf mountain pine and open subalpine meadows near the flat summit area. This transition from dark, enclosed woodland to wide, exposed scrub is the defining feature of the climb.

Underfoot, the trails vary significantly depending on your altitude. The lower forest paths are dominated by exposed tree roots, soil, and occasional muddy patches, while the upper sections transition into rough, stony tracks made of weathered sandstone slabs. A vast, flat peat bog sits near the summit plateau, where wooden boardwalks help walkers navigate the delicate, waterlogged terrain without damaging the protected subalpine vegetation.

The summit area can be busy on weekends, particularly around the mountain shelter at Hala Miziowa, but the extensive network of border paths offers quieter alternatives.
