Parque Natural Lago de Sanabria y Sierras Segundera y de Porto is defined by its glacial history, leaving a landscape of stark contrasts. At the lower elevations, Spain's largest glacial lake is surrounded by dense oak forests where the paths are often soft with leaf litter and crossed by exposed tree roots. As you climb higher into the sierras, the trees disappear, replaced by a high-altitude plateau of granite slabs, peat bogs, and shallow glacial lagoons. Here, the tracks become rocky, uneven, and demanding, requiring careful footwork over bare stone.

Unlike gentler lakeside parks, this area demands preparation for rugged mountain terrain once you leave the shoreline. The lower lake paths are well-marked and see the most foot traffic, particularly around the sandy beaches of the lake itself. In contrast, the upper trails into the Sierras Segundera are remote and exposed, with cairns often replacing painted blazes. You will walk across open heathland and wet peat areas where the trail can become waterlogged, requiring detours across granite boulders.

In late spring, around May, the high plateau is marked by flowering yellow broom and white heather, contrasting with the grey granite. By autumn, the oak forests near the lake turn deep orange, while the high pastures are already dry and brown.
