Parco Nazionale dell'Isola di Pantelleria occupies a volcanic island where the landscape is shaped by geothermal activity and dry-stone agricultural terraces. Walkers will find a stark contrast between the dark, jagged obsidian flows and the cultivated pockets of zibibbo vines grown in shallow depressions. The terrain is dominated by Montagna Grande, a pine-covered volcanic dome, and the surrounding favare, which are natural vents releasing hot steam directly from the rocky ground.

Underfoot, the paths vary from dusty, loose volcanic ash and crushed pumice to rough, uneven basalt tracks that require careful stepping. There are no sandy beaches or lush alpine meadows here. Instead, the trails wind through low, wind-sheared Mediterranean scrub, known as macchia, and past traditional stone dammusi dwellings. In the interior, the Specchio di Venere is a volcanic crater lake fed by thermal springs, where the shoreline consists of thick, mineral-rich mud rather than gravel.

Walking in May reveals a landscape green with emerging wild fennel and flowering gorse, before the summer heat dries the vegetation to a uniform brown. The lower coastal paths are often busier with visitors exploring the rocky coves, while the steep, forested tracks leading up the central volcanic peaks offer a much quieter, more isolated experience among the holm oaks.
