The best hiking routes in Parco Naturale Regionale Litorale di Ugento

Parco Naturale Regionale Litorale di Ugento stretches along the southwestern coast of the Salento peninsula, presenting a flat landscape defined by parallel strips of sand dunes, shallow basins, and pine woods. Walking here means navigating a series of distinct zones that run parallel to the Ionian Sea. The terrain transitions rapidly from loose coastal sand to firmer dirt tracks through Aleppo pine plantations, and onto the rocky, low scrub of the inland ridges known as serre.

Underfoot, the paths vary significantly depending on which zone you choose. The immediate shoreline offers soft sand walking, while the paths skirting the bacini (reclaimed wetlands) consist of hard-packed earth and gravel. These artificial basins and channels, built to drain the marshlands, are bordered by thick reed beds and glasswort, offering flat, level walking with no elevation gain. Further inland, the ground turns to exposed limestone, where low-growing rosemary and mastic shrubs require sturdier footwear.

This park is not a place for deep forest hiking or dramatic coastal cliffs. Instead, it offers a horizontal landscape where the main interest lies in the transition from marine to wetland habitats. In October, the migratory birds in the basins and the flowering of autumn sea daffodils on the dunes provide the main points of interest along the trails.
