About Parco Naturale delle Alpi Marittime

Parco Naturale delle Alpi Marittime is characterized by its steep, glaciated limestone and crystalline rock formations, where deep glacial valleys rise sharply to jagged ridges. Unlike softer limestone ranges, this area features high-altitude granite walls, scree slopes, and numerous natural alpine lakes fed by melting snow. Walkers will notice a stark transition from dense beech and silver fir forests in the lower valleys to larch woods, and eventually to bare rock and alpine meadows as the elevation increases.

The trail network consists largely of historic military roads built with stone paving, alongside rough, rocky singletracks that require careful foot placement. These stone-paved tracks, constructed with dry-stone retaining walls, offer a stable but hard surface underfoot, while higher paths cross loose scree and boulder fields. Water is a constant presence on the landscape, with rushing torrents and waterfalls cutting through the gorges, particularly visible in the Vallone di Gesso.

This park does not offer gentle, rolling hills or easy, flat strolls; most routes involve significant, sustained elevation gain. Due to the high altitude, snow often blocks the higher passes until late June, making mid-summer and September the practical times for reaching the upper lakes and cols. While popular trailheads like Terme di Valdieri can be busy with visitors seeking the thermal waters, the higher, more demanding paths into the upper basins remain quiet and dominated by alpine wildlife.
