The Parc naturel r gional des Ardennes, situated in northern France, is defined by the deep, winding valleys of the Meuse and Semoy rivers. Unlike the flatter agricultural plains further south, this area presents a landscape of steep, densely forested slopes and high slate plateaus. Walkers should expect sharp elevation changes rather than gently rolling hills, with paths that transition quickly from damp riverside tracks to rocky, shale-strewn ridges.

Underfoot, the terrain is dominated by schist and slate, which can make the steeper ascents and descents uneven. The dense canopy of oak, beech, and spruce trees keeps the forest floor shaded, meaning the leaf litter on the paths remains damp long after rainfall.
