The best hiking routes in Parc naturel de Gaume

Parc naturel de Gaume offers a distinct landscape shaped by three parallel cuesta ridges, which create a series of south-facing slopes and sheltered valleys. Unlike the higher, colder plateau of the Ardennes directly to the north, this area is characterized by a milder microclimate and sandy limestone soils. Walking here means transitioning between dense deciduous forests on the steeper slopes, open agricultural plains, and damp alluvial meadows along the Semois and Ton rivers.

Underfoot, the paths vary from sandy tracks on the dry, pine-covered hillsides to soft clay and silt in the valley bottoms. In the lower meadows, wooden boardwalks occasionally help walkers cross the marshy ground near natural springs. The limestone geology is visible along the trails in the form of old quarry faces and yellow-stone buildings in the villages, which differ from the grey slate found further north.

In May, the beech forests on the northern slopes are filled with fresh green foliage, while the dry calcareous grasslands on the south-facing hillsides support wild orchids. This is a landscape of gentle, rolling hills and quiet river valleys rather than deep gorges or dramatic peaks. The well-known scenic spots near Virton can attract more visitors, but the quieter forest tracks near the French border remain peaceful.
