The Paisagem Protegida Regional Parque das Serras do Porto offers a rugged, low-mountain landscape dominated by pale quartzite ridges and deep-cut river valleys, located just a short distance from the Porto metropolitan area. Walking here means navigating a terrain shaped by ancient geological folding and centuries of intense human use, where dense eucalyptus plantations on the lower slopes contrast with bare, rocky crests. Underfoot, you will mostly encounter rough gravel tracks, loose shale, and steep, stony paths that require stable footing, rather than soft forest soil or manicured park paths.

As you walk, the landscape reveals its dual nature. The high ridges of the Santa Justa and Pias hills are dry and exposed, characterized by low-growing gorse, heather, and exposed rock formations where ancient fossil traces can sometimes be spotted in the quartzite. In deep contrast, dropping down into the valleys of the Ferreira and Sousa rivers brings you into a shaded, humid environment. Here, the paths run alongside rushing water, old watermills, and small patches of native oak and riparian woodland that have survived the surrounding forestry.
