The New Forest National Park is not a dense, unbroken woodland, but a low-lying mosaic of open heathland, boggy valleys, and ancient pasture woodlands. Walkers should expect a gently undulating landscape rather than steep climbs or dramatic viewpoints. The terrain is shaped by centuries of commoning, where free-roaming ponies, cattle, and pigs graze the gorse and heather, keeping the undergrowth open and creating distinct browse lines on the lower branches of oak and beech trees.

Underfoot, the paths vary significantly depending on the specific habitat. The dry, gravelly ridges of the northern heaths offer firm, sandy tracks, whereas the lower-lying lawns and mires require careful navigation.
