Nacionalni park Krka is defined by its travertine barrier system, where a karst river flows through a deep limestone canyon, creating a series of stepped waterfalls, lakes, and pools. The landscape is split between the lush, humid riverbed environment and the arid, scrubby karst plateau that rises sharply above it. Walkers will notice a stark contrast between the cool, shaded riverbanks thick with deciduous trees and the exposed, sun-baked limestone slopes dominated by low Mediterranean shrubs.

Underfoot, the walking surfaces vary significantly depending on your elevation. The lower, busier sections of the river are navigated almost entirely on elevated wooden boardwalks that loop over rushing water and marshy channels. As you move away from the main cascades and head upstream or climb the canyon walls, the boardwalks give way to gravel tracks, dirt paths, and uneven, rocky limestone trails that require sturdy footwear.
