The best hiking routes in Krivoštianka

Krivoštianka offers a steep, forested climb directly above the Laborec river valley. Unlike the flatter agricultural plains nearby, this limestone ridge is covered in dense beech and oak forests, with pockets of thermophilous vegetation on the southern slopes. It is not a high-alpine environment with open vistas, but rather a rugged, enclosed woodland walk where the elevation gain is concentrated into sharp, continuous ascents. The terrain is characterized by rocky limestone outcrops, loose stones, and forest soil that can become slick underfoot.

As you walk, the changing forest composition reflects the underlying geology. The northern slopes are dominated by cool, shaded beech stands, while the sun-exposed southern faces transition into drier, scrubbier oak woodland. You will notice small limestone cliffs and sinkholes along the ridge, which are typical of this karst landscape. The trail is mostly a natural forest path, occasionally interrupted by exposed tree roots and limestone steps.

In May, the forest floor is briefly cleared of canopy shade, allowing wild garlic and spring flowers to carpet the ground before the beech leaves fully block the light. The ridge path is generally quiet, though the sections closest to the river and the trailheads see regular local foot traffic. Krivoštianka is best suited for walkers who prefer steep, shaded woodland climbs over open, panoramic ridge walks.
