About Babiogórski Park Narodowy
Babiogórski Park Narodowy centers on the massive Babia Góra ridge, the highest sandstone massif in the Beskids. Unlike the limestone peaks of nearby ranges, this landscape is defined by flysch sandstone, which creates steep, forested slopes prone to landslides and debris flows. As you climb, you will notice a distinct, classic zonation of vegetation. The lower slopes are covered in dense beech and fir forest, which transitions into spruce woods, then a thick belt of dwarf pine, and finally an alpine zone of windswept grasslands and bare stone blocks at the summit ridge.

Underfoot, the trails vary from soft, needle-strewn dirt paths in the lower forests to steep, rocky tracks made of sandstone slabs and loose scree near the top. Some steep sections, particularly on the Akademicka Perć trail, feature fixed chains and steps to help walkers negotiate vertical rock steps. The northern slopes are significantly steeper and more rugged than the gentler, southern approach, offering a completely different walking experience depending on your chosen route.
This park is not a place for gentle, flat strolls; it requires steady climbing and preparation for exposed, rocky terrain above the treeline. While the lower forest trails offer shelter, the summit ridge is entirely open to the elements, where the dwarf pine zone abruptly ends. The area around the main peak, Diablak, and the Markowe Szczawiny mountain shelter are well-known spots that can be busier, whereas the boundary trails along the lower elevations often provide a quieter forest walk.
