The best hiking routes in Αστερούσια

The Asterousia range presents a stark, vertical landscape of bare limestone, deep gorges, and dry scrub that drops abruptly into the southern Libyan Sea. Unlike the greener, gentler hills of northern Crete, this southern barrier is defined by its arid, sun-baked rock faces and a near-total absence of shade. Walkers will find a terrain dominated by sharp scree, eroded cliffs, and low, thorny phrygana bushes that cling to the hillsides. Water is scarce, and the few springs are confined to deep ravines.

Underfoot, the paths are predominantly rough, stony goat tracks and loose gravel beds that require careful foot placement. There are no paved promenades or gentle woodland paths here; instead, you will navigate steep, uneven descents through gorges like Agiofarago or Martsalo, where the route often follows dry, boulder-strewn torrent beds. The landscape is shaped by intense grazing and erosion, leaving a skeletal mountain structure where the geology is completely exposed to view.

While the high ridges offer wide views over the sea, the area is not a place for casual strolling. The lack of signposting on many interior tracks means navigation relies on spotting stone cairns. In spring, particularly around April, the grey limestone is briefly dotted with hardy wildflowers, but by mid-summer the landscape returns to its default state of dry, pale rock and intense heat.
